Components of the In2Hula
Hoop with Heart Programme
Below are the components of the Hoop with Heart programme. These components have been designed to support early learning services to achieve a Heart Foundation Healthy Heart Award. However, while this programme has been designed to support the Healthy Heart Award, it does also fulfil a number of the learning outcomes from the NZ early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki. For this reason, early learning services may wish to engage In2Hula to run aspects of this programme in their centre even if they are not working towards a Healthy Heart Award.
As In2Hula Managing Director Bernadette Smith notes: “Our key focus is the positive mental and physical health benefits of physical activity.”
Early learning services can choose which programme components they wish to use for their centre depending on what level of the Healthy Heart Award they wish to achieve. The programme is designed to be flexible. For example, one early learning service may choose to only have three activity sessions with the children, while another may wish to have four activity sessions with the children and run a whanau event. The complete programme is set up to work through a progression of demonstrating how to, and purposefully engaging children in active play with hula hoops, then allowing the children to share their experiences and learning with whanau and the wider community in a way that also engages them in physical activities with hula hoops, and then teaching ELS teachers how to facilitate hula hoop based activities themselves.
One 30-60 minute pre-planning session with early learning service staff
1-7 thirty minute practical hula hoop physical activity sessions with children in collaboration with staff. Individual early learning services and centres can choose the number of sessions they want and the frequency, for example, 2 sessions one week apart, or 4 sessions with one daily over four days. There are 7 session options to choose from including some sessions which are suitable for an indoor environment. Each of the sessions includes aspects of Māori culture and language. The physical activity sessions provide a social and happy learning environment. Activities are conducted to music and develop motor skills, brain connection pathways and imaginative play. We aim to provide a positive learning environment where the children can try new things, gain confidence and have fun being active.
Optional: a whānau/community event where children can demonstrate what they have learned and others are encouraged to participate such as a lunchtime ‘Have a Go’ session and shared healthy lunch, or a late afternoon ‘Hoop Olympics’ event. In2Hula can provide equipment and a facilitator for this.
Optional: early learning service teacher professional development workshop in hula hoop based fitness activities.
